Mast Way Elementary School Certifies 100% of Staff in CPR

Durham, NH - August 30, 2007 - Mast Way Elementary School, part of Oyster River Cooperative School District, is the first school in the state to have 100% of its staff certified in CPR. Working closely with McGregor Memorial EMS, a non-profit EMS agency, the Mast Way staff spent the morning of August 28th learning how to save a life. Through hands on training with life-like manikins and practice AED's, 10 McGregor instructors led all 70 staff members through the compressions and rescue breaths of CPR, as well as the lifesaving application of the school's defibrillator.

Mast Way Elementary School's commitment to the health and safety of New Hampshire's school children has earned it the CPR SafeTM certification. This certification recognizes a school's commitment to child health and safety and, ultimately, makes the school and community a safer place for all. McGregor designed this program as a school-friendly project in order to assist schools in training and certifying teachers and staff in American Heart Association CPR and AED use. In working with the New Hampshire Department of Education, McGregor hopes to promote CPR training and preparedness in all New Hampshire schools.

What Makes a CPR SafeTM School?

  1. The school has made child health and safety a priority through staff professional development, day to day operations, student wellness education, and CPR certifications.
  2. At least 75% of the school staff is certified in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and has been trained in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  3. The school is equipped with an AED which is easily accessible to all.

Hilltop Elementary School has exceeded these requirements and is a leading example of the dedication and caring of New Hampshire's school teachers. Moharimet Elementary School, also in the Oyster River School District, became CPR SafeTM certified last year and has scheduled a CPR re-certification class for school staff in September.
