Bomb Scare Hits Madbury Metal Recycling Center

Madbury, NH - June 21, 2007 - Original story in Foster's Daily Democrat.

A bomb scare had Madbury and State Police scouring the site of Schnitzer Northeast metal recycling for hours Wednesday night.

The original call came from the Schnitzer foreman at around 4:25 p.m., according to Madbury police. The foreman had heard from the owner of a junkyard in Milton who warned that a number of catalytic converters had been stolen from his junkyard, one of which contained an explosive device.

Schnitzer, a metal recycling center located off of Route 155, had received 10 of the stolen catalytic converters and the foreman was concerned that one of them may be incendiary, based on his conversation with the man from Milton.

Madbury called State Police for assistance, who sent their explosives unit to the scene to investigate. Police declared the property all clear by 8 p.m., but remained on scene investigating well into the night.

The Madbury Fire Department and McGregor Memorial EMS were put on standby in case of an explosion, police said.

Schnitzer Northeast was formerly New England Metal Recycling, and before that was Madbury Metals.

State Police continue to investigate the incident.
